This encyclopedic comics history of the formative years of hip hop captures the vivid personalities and magnetic performances of old-school pioneers and early stars like DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, plus the charismatic players behind the scenes like Russell Simmons; Debbie Harry, Keith Haring and other luminaries make cameos. The lore of the early days of hip hop has become the stuff of myth, so what better way to document this fascinating, epic true story than in another great American mythological medium — the comic book? From exciting young talent and self-proclaimed hip hop nerd Ed Piskor, acclaimed for his hacker graphic novel Wizzywig, comes this explosively entertaining, encyclopedic history of the formative years of the music genre that changed global culture. Originally serialized on the hugely popular website Boing Boing, The Hip Hop Family Tree is now collected in a single volume cleverly presented and packaged in a style mimicking the Marvel comics of the same era. Piskor’s exuberant yet controlled cartooning takes you from the parks and rec rooms of the South Bronx to the night clubs, recording studios, and radio stations where the scene started to boom, capturing the flavor of late-1970s New York City in panels bursting with obsessively authentic detail. With a painstaking, vigorous and engaging Ken Burns meets- Stan Lee approach, the battles and rivalries, the technical innovations, the triumphs and failures are all thoroughly researched and lovingly depicted. plus the charismatic players behind the scenes like Russell Simmons, Sylvia Robinson and then-punker Rick Rubin. Piskor also traces graffiti master Fab 5 Freddy’s rise in the art world, and Debbie Harry, Keith Haring, The Clash, and other luminaries make cameos as the music and culture begin to penetrate downtown Manhattan and the mainstream at large. Like the acclaimed hip hop documentaries Style Wars and Scratch, The Hip Hop Family Tree is an exciting and essential cultural chronicle and a must for hip hop fans, pop-culture addicts, and anyone who wants to know how it went down back in the day. On TheDollarElp Rocky:
Hip Hop News : I love his passion for Houston culture I’ve been intrigued through the same factor. I love that it is less about just him and much more about his crew, that is the way i live my existence. Drake is no one Drake is most of us, you realize? I love that many. After which after i met him he was so cordial. Like he introduced us a bottle of Cristal to where I had been DJing at, that was very classy of him. He asked me to his show as well as found the rear door making sure i was good he’s only a very great person. He’s a really gifted guy, and there is not really much advice to provide somebody like this. If he ever asks me about anything I’d be more than pleased to possess a conversation with him, but he’s a great person and he’s already on the right track. Similar to Kendrick Lamar too, another guy who’s only a great person, good heart, good team around him. I love people like this.
More following the cut.
Beside me and Tay, I kinda dropped the ball on the feature he needed me to complete, just being 100% honest. I truly desired to perform a record with him, and that we really did perform a record for my album, after which something happened using the producer and also the beat, also it began getting funny and so i needed to scrap the record. After which he was like, “Well, are you able to do that feature for me personally,” and at that time I had been looking for my seem and trying to puzzle out what this album would actually cover, and that i type of allow it to slip with the cracks. Which was my fault, and that i do apologize to Phonte for your. However I still want to get it done I spoken to ninth Question about trying to get it done, we’ll have it eventually. They know he’s among the greatest influences on my small career.
On Rap Battles & Betting Nelly 50k:
I’m an enormous fan from the fight scene. I’ve been keen on Hollow Da Don. Clearly The-Saurus is nasty Iron Solomon is nasty. I usually watch the URL TV battles despite the fact that I had been really mad in the 4g iphone they did since the seem am bad. But yeah, it will get me excited within the studio, to look at these emcees, to determine them rap for any entirely unique cause. I rap to create albums I rap to create radio records. However these men prep of these competitions where my heart could be beating from my chest basically ever walked to a different guy and that i needed to fight him [for] three models, lengthy-ass models because of so many raps to consider. And So I end up with inspired with that, seeing others doing exactly the same factor but doing the work so in a different way.
I wager on Hollow because, well I’ll always wager on Hollow, he’s nasty. I love Hitman Holla [Nelly wager on Hitman Holla] but Hollow’s just more consistent, and clearly Hollow Da Don won the fight.
Nelly hasn’t compensated me up. But he’ll though!
